Formed from the ashes of Johnstown-based Shadow 5 in 2002, Shades of June are regulars on the Johnstown rock scene, frequently playing high-energy shows in many of the area’s most popular live music venues. Although their live shows include a generous dose of cover songs from bands such as Weezer, Green Day and Fallout Boy, Shades of June puts just as much energy into creating their own original material. For anyone who has seen Shades of June perform, they know about the high energy, good time that their show can be. But for anyone who hasn't seen them perform or have never heard of Shades of June, the foursome want to show that their love for music and performing runs deep. "Shades of June is all about the live shows and having a good time. The band was started for just that reason to make sure everyone in the venue had a good time," said Ryan Krinjeck, who contributes to the band on guitar and backing vocals. "Over the past several years, I believe we have continued to grow in this area. Energy, up-beat songs and amazing musicianship are all good descriptors of Shades of June," he added. Joining Krinjeck in Shades of June are: Chris McConnell on drums and percussion, Jessica Maguire on vocals and Chris "Stewie" Myer on bass guitar and backing vocals. The Shades of June members have all been interested in music since an early age. "It's always been an interest of mine ever since I first heard the Ramones and the Sex Pistols when I was a little kid," said McConnell. "I love everything about music, actually. Music is a powerful stimulant and trigger. And there's no feeling like watching a crowd really get into a song that you created," he added. It's creativity that Shades of June continue to foster through their original songs and their songwriting. "Songwriting for me is an intimate experience. I feel very strongly that you should not write a song unless you have a reason to write a song. When you have a reason or an emotion that lends itself to writing a song, that song will naturally connect with people," said Krinjeck. "The sweet just isnít as sweet without the sour was a quote that I heard one time and it is true. It is these sweet and sour times that I look to when constructing a song," he said. "Personally, I'll take an experience and write it down in a notebook, not necessarily in a song form but more like a diary entry," said Maguire. "If the moment arises and our band is writing an original, I'll take my notebook out and try to incorporate some entries into the song and see how it fits," she said. While Maguire feels that Shades of June's best song is "Reflection" because the lyrics and melody come together to create "somber, yet beautiful images", McConnell suggests differently. "I'd like to think that our best song has yet to be written. We're constantly evolving and growing and learning how to play upon each otherís strengths and weaknesses as performers," said McConnell. "In this way, I think we will be able to continue to grow as musicians and be able to write better and better music as a result," he said. Once the songs are written, the group knows that it's who grasps the music that matters. "Our fans are everything. We have begun to grow what is becoming an amazing fan base in our region. These crazy, fun-loving people are the reason I go on stage every week," said Krinjeck. "I've been very pleased with the increase of our fan base, especially in the past year. We consider our fans our friends," said Maguire. "When I am standing on stage, in front of a packed house and someone in the crowd is shouting for us to play an original, it is the best feeling in the world," said Krinjeck.
