The Wheels The Wheels hail from Pittsburgh, but the five-piece rock band is no stranger to Johnstown. Drawing from influences such as The Kinks, Little Feat and Gram Parsons, the band has been seen at various Johnstown venues and festivals, in addition to regular club shows in Pittsburgh, Erie, Morgantown and Cleveland. Members are TJ Connolly, Brad Barron, Jake Brieding, Joe Piacquadio and Matt Vucic. The band released its first album last December after a year of recording in a pro studio, and has since sold more than 500 copies. Plans are in the works to head back to the studio in 2010 for the next full-length album. For more, visit The Wheels online at myspace.com/thewheelspittsburgh.

Sunflower Spectacle Despite the band’s sunny name, Sunflower Spectacle singer Chris Kupchella said his seven-member psychedelic folk rock group’s music is noticeably dimmer. “The songs mainly focus on life’s tragedies which can be anything from the death or loss of someone close to you; or coming to terms with human mortality,” he said. The music features vocal harmonies, a range of instruments and an atmospheric soundscape influenced by the likes of Bob Dylan, The Velvet Underground, Modest Mouse, R.E.M., Syd Barrett, The Kinks, The Beatles, Roy Orbison, The Beach Boys, The Flaming Lips, The Walkmen, Television, Yo La Tengo, The Arcade Fire, and Leonard Cohen. Band members also include Derek Gresh, Kevin Horvath, Justin Gyurik, Cory Shoff, Brandon Shreve, Alan Horvath, and producer Troy Bugosh is credited as an unoffical eighth member.
